BRAC is an international development organization and global leader in developing cost-effective, evidence-based poverty innovations in extremely poor, conflict-prone, and post-disaster settings. BRAC envisions a world free of all forms of exploitation and discrimination where everyone has the opportunity to realize their potential. To achieve this vision, BRAC creates opportunities for people in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease, and social injustice by running programs in financial inclusion, education, healthcare, legal rights, girls’ empowerment, agriculture, socially responsible businesses, a bank, a university, and one of the world’s largest mobile money platforms, bKash. Founded in Bangladesh in 1972, BRAC is the only international development organization of its scale born in the global south. Today, BRAC is active in 11 countries around the world, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines, touching the lives of more than 110 million people each year. In 2018, BRAC was ranked the number one non-governmental organization (NGO) in the world for the third year running by NGO Advisor, an independent media organization based in Geneva. BRAC’s annual global expenditure exceeds $1 billion, and in Bangladesh, more than 75% of its budget is funded by its own socially responsible businesses.
