Our Mission

To get nutritious donated food to where it's needed most in an efficient and timely manner. NZFN aggregate and hold food in safe ambient, chilled and frozen facilities and make it available across the country (at no cost) to support vulnerable and food insecure members of the communities.

The Need

As the impact of COVID-19 continues to unfold, it is expected 1 million people in New Zealand will be living without reliable access to affordable and nutritious food (NZ pop. 5M). Meanwhile tonnes of edible food still ends up as waste. NZFN bridges the gap between supply and demand to nourish Kiwis

The Solution

NZFN efficiently and safely captures and then redistributes surplus and donated food nationally. The centralized DCs receive a wide variety of food groups due to our national reach. NZFN breakdown, repackage and mix bulk foods into more balanced food support packages for our vulnerable communities.

Our Impact

In the last 12 months NZFN has rescued & redistributed nearly 2.6 million kgs of food (equivalent to over 7.6 million meals) to food hubs across the country, who help facilitate food distribution to other food agencies at a community level. The food reaches hundreds of thousands of people across NZ.

For New Zealand Food Network (NZFN) it is a collaborative approach by working together – Donors, NZFN and Food Hubs – NZFN can get the maximum amount of good, nutritious food to where it’s needed most.

The benefits of the services for Food Donors are:

  • One single point of contact to move bulk volumes of food
  • Retain their current relationships with food hubs.
  • Make a significant difference to local communities and those in greatest need NZ-wide
  • Make a significant contribution to waste minimization targets

The benefits of the services for Food Hubs are:

  • Simple system to receive food as it’s required
  • As more companies channel bulk stock (currently going to waste) through NZFN, Food Hubs receive more food
  • Food hubs receive a wider variety and can provide more balanced food support packages to their community
  • Food Hubs can redirect their funding from their food budgets to support their other services
